24 HOURS BEFORE THE NEW TRAILER GOES ONLINE!
Hi Rockabilly friends!

I have been working like MAD in the last two weeks editing the new Rockabilly 514 trailer. I finished the rough cut at 6:00 AM this morning and I'm happy to say that our producer (Amérimage-Spectra) approved it!

For those who are new on this site, I just want to remind you that Mike Wafer and I have been working on this film since July 2003, that is three years of our lives invested on this project. We have already accumulated hundred of hours of footage; been to five cities and there is still more filming to be done until the next Red Hot and Blue Rockabilly Festival.

I am soooo excited to show you the new trailer!!! You might see yourself in it if you were at the Viva Las Vegas or the Red Hot & Blue Weekenders!

Stay tuned! Just one more day to go before the video goes online!!!!

To our lovely Montreal community: You guys rock! We couldn't have made this film without you guys! (you know who you are!). The film is totally dedicated to our 514 rockin' scene!

Lots of Love,

xox Patricia Chica and Mike Wafer

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: PHOTOS AND INTERVIEW PART 2! (June 7th, 2006)
TEN QUESTIONS TO NATHAN CHASZEYKA: Additional Shooter of Rockabilly 514.

1. What was your role and tasks on the production of ROCKABILLY 514?

I was the 2nd Camera on the Las Vegas portion of the documentary.

2. What is your professional background?

I am an award winning Director of Photography and Editor. My experience has mainly emphasized narrative drama, which was a big asset in providing an artistic style of shooting on Rockabilly 514. While largely self taught and trained in the world of still photography, my education in film was received at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

3. How did you get involved in this project?

Patricia Chica was looking for local camera operators to cover the additional photography, I answered one of her message board postings and promptly delivered my demo reel to her doorstep. She was impressed with my energy for the project and shooting style.

4. Why did you want to work with Patricia Chica?

I was very impressed with Patricia's demo reel and list of previous experiences. I feel that there is a lot to be gained from working with such an experienced individual. I was also very eager to work with a female director as most of my previous experiences have been with male directors and DoP's. It was a nice change of pace.

5. What makes a good shooter on a documentary film?

First and foremost, the ability to stay focused on the story that is unfolding in front of him. A steady hand, and the ability to find the interesting compositions and shots after long hours of work is what makes a good operator stand apart.

6. What did you learn about the rockabilly subculture while working on this project?

Honestly, I learned what it was generally about. I did not have a very good idea beyond the style of dress. It was interesting to learn that it's very much a subculture and not just a fashion statement.

7. What is the most challenging experience while working on this production?

Far and away the most challenging experience was shooting from a horse, especially a horse that did not like me very much. The long hours were also quite a challenge. With my experience being mostly on sets and locations, I am not used to burning through six and seven hours of footage a day. It was a battle to keep sharp and find the shots with no time to break and reset in between. I gained a new respect for Patricia and her level of competency in the documentary field.

8. What has been the most regarding experience for you during the production?

The most rewarding experience for me was gaining a new perspective on shooting artistic compositions quickly and under stress. Patricia pushed me to a new level that called upon some of my still photography shooting styles in order to make a picture that was what she was looking for.

9. What advice would you give to a film student who wants to work on a documentary project?

NO TALKING HEADS! This is a technique that is over used in todays documentaries. Patricia made it clear that she was striving for a look that more closely resembled a narrative film from the '50s rather than a run of the mill documentary. I think that this is going to be a much more prevalent trend in documentaries to come and that Patricia is on the leading edge with her style.

10. What can we expect from this film when it comes out?

Expect an interesting, and more importantly, fun look into the life of a group of individuals that know how to have a good time and can respect the finer points of days gone by.

Anything else that you would like to say?

Horses and cameras don't mix.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: PHOTOS AND INTERVIEW - PART 1! (June 7th, 2006)
TEN QUESTIONS TO CATHERINE BOMBARDIER: Assistant-Director of Rockabilly 514.

1. Describe your role on the production of Rockabilly 514?

My role as the assistant-director of Rockabilly 514 is to make sure that everybody is ready to Rock! I have to make sure that everybody is happy and able to work properly on set. One of my key roles is also to keep contact with the characters, and to fix any problems that may arise during the production, etc.

2. What is your professional background?

I am a graduate of the School Art and Technology of the Media at Cégep de Jonquière (2002-2005). Since I graduated, I have worked on a few adverts as a production assistant; on a play as a technician; on a big comedy festival called Just For Laughs as the assistant location manager and on a TV series for Radio-Canada as the costume assistant. Currently, I am also working as the assistant art-director on a Quebec feature film.

3. How did you get involved with this project?

I really loved Patricia Chica's work and Rockabilly 514 was one of hers and Mike Wafer's projects. The film presents a subculture that seemed very interesting to me. I really wanted to be part of the documentary with Patricia and Mike and it worked out for me!

4. What makes a good assistant-director on a documentary film?

To be everywhere at the same time! Also, to be patient, to believe in the project, to be able to think forward and not to be afraid to work hard and long days!

5. What is your take on the rockabilly subculture in Montreal?

It's amazing! I love their way, their colors, their music, their clothes, their cars, their way of partying; everything! Wow!

6. What other cities did you visit during the filming of this documentary?

Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey.

7. What is the most challenging experience while filming on the road?

To be so tired and keep going. We were a small team (three people) so that was more work for everybody. The most challenging part is to be able to make it happen like if we were six people!

8. What has been the most rewarding thing for you during the production?

To make it real, to make it happen.

9. What advice would you give to a film student who wants to work on a documentary project?

To be courageous, perseverant, to take one step ahead of everybody and to be passionate about what you do!

10. What can we expect from this film when it comes out?

Its going to kick some serious ass! It is going to be an art documentary, a factual documentary, very representative of the subculture. We worked hard on it and I am very proud of it!

Anything else that you would like to say?

Thanks to Mike and Patricia for letting me be part of this incredible experience! Everybody should experience something like that in whatever they are working on!!!!
